President Mohamed Nasheed and Sri Lanka’s Western Province Governor, Sayyed Alawi Maulana, discussed local governance and decentralization during a courtesy call the latter paid on the President, today.

In a meeting held at the Official Residence of the President, President Nasheed informed the governor that the government had sent a Bill on Decentralization to the People’s Majlis and that the Maldives would hold local elections for the first time.

The governor briefed on the local governance system in Sri Lanka and discussed the benefits of such a system.

Discussions were also on the scourge of terrorism and both acknowledged the presence of the threat in the region and the importance of taking measures against it.
