President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conferred the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin (O.D.R.I.) upon Uz Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa. The prestigious national honour was presented during the official Independence Day ceremony held this morning.
Uz Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa is a renowned Islamic scholar who has devoted decades to serving the Maldives through religious education, scholarship and public service. He is widely recognised for his lifelong efforts to promote Islamic awareness, teach religious knowledge and author numerous works on Islam.
After completing his higher education at Al-Azhar University in Egypt, he returned to the Maldives and began his career as a mathematics teacher at Majeedhiyya School. He is regarded as one of the country's pioneering educators in the field of mathematics.
During the administration of former President Uz Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Uz Ibrahim played a leading role in establishing Ma’had al-Dirasat al-Islamiyya, the Maldives' first institution dedicated to Arabic and Islamic education. As its founding head, he expanded its curriculum from primary through higher secondary education and helped create opportunities for Maldivian students to pursue Arabic and Islamic studies abroad.
He has also made significant contributions as a prolific author and translator. He has translated 11 books and authored more than 50 publications on Islamic subjects. In addition, he has written and produced numerous educational programmes, including the 365-episode Qur'an Kiyavan Dhas Kuramaa Tho series and the 52-part Qur'an and Science series. He also translated into Dhivehi the acclaimed television series Muhammad Rasoolullah, which continues to attract a wide audience during Ramadan.
Beyond his contributions to Islamic scholarship, Uz Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa has served as an editor, secretary and columnist for several publications, including Amaazu and Faiythoora, while contributing articles to numerous other magazines and newspapers.
Over a public service career spanning more than 43 years, Uz Ibrahim Rasheed Moosa has held several senior positions. He served for many years at Ma’had al-Dirasat al-Islamiyya and later at the Kulliyyah al-Dirasat al-Islamiyya. Upon his retirement from public service on 17 November 2018, he was serving as President of the National Centre for the Holy Qur'an.
