President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Administration’s reform efforts are guided by the national interest rather than personal convenience. He made these remarks during the Sangu TV programme “Espresso with Raees”, held this evening with youth participants.
Speaking on reforms proposed to the People’s Majlis as part of the Administration’s reform agenda, the President noted that leaders are entrusted by citizens to act in the best interests of the nation. He emphasised that the reforms have been carefully planned and are being implemented with the objective of delivering long-term national benefits.
During the programme, the President outlined key elements of the proposed constitutional amendments, including provisions to reserve a percentage of seats in the People’s Majlis for youth and women, as well as details of the referendum scheduled for April. He clarified that the proposal to allocate parliamentary seats for youth and women is not contingent upon the outcome of the referendum. The President also stated that measures would be proposed to address the continued increase in the number of parliamentary members, regardless of the referendum’s outcome, and encouraged youth to engage in discussions on these proposals.
Responding to questions on the referendum, the President explained the rationale for holding two elections concurrently. He noted that this approach would reduce the period of uncertainty at the start of a new administration, ensure a more independent environment for parliamentary elections, and contribute to higher voter turnout and accountability.
The President also shared updates on youth-focused initiatives currently under way and reiterated his commitment to empowering young people and strengthening their participation in national development. He stated that the Government’s reform agenda is intended to support greater youth engagement in shaping the country’s future.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed was also in attendance at this evening’s programme.
