His Excellency President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called for decisive global climate action, underscoring energy security as a cornerstone of the Maldives’ socio-economic development and long-term national resilience.

In his message marking the International Day of Clean Energy, the President stressed that for a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), attaining energy security and driving climate action are essential for our progress.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted that Maldives has significantly increased renewable energy capacity over the past two years and is making additional investments in solar PV implementation, while exploring technologies best suited for the country’s environmental conditions.

He also outlined that the Government is taking concrete steps to boost energy efficiency and strengthen the legal and regulatory framework of the energy sector. These efforts support the Government’s ambitious goal of generating 33 per cent of the country’s energy needs from renewable sources by 2028.

Reaffirming the Government’s commitment to sustainable development, President Dr Muizzu urged all stakeholders to pursue bold, forward-looking initiatives. “Let us all play our part in transitioning to cleaner energy and champion bold, decisive action to protect our planet” he said, envisioning a resilient and sustainable future for all Maldivians.

In a post on X marking the occasion, the President emphasised that this transition serves as a catalyst for broader societal growth. By integrating clean energy into the national framework, the administration aims to directly strengthen education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, ensuring energy security remains a vital driver of human development and robust public services.

The International Day of Clean Energy, established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, is observed annually on 26 January - the founding date of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The day aims to mobilise global action towards a just energy transition while recognising IRENA’s role in advancing international cooperation and clean energy innovation since 2009.
