President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that all international airports in the Maldives will be equipped with E-Gates in 2026. He shared this update on his official X account, highlighting ongoing efforts to install state-of-the-art, technologically advanced E-Gates in the new terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).

In his post, the President confirmed that ten E-Gates will be installed at each terminal, covering both arrivals and departures, before 1 January 2026. He further highlighted the extension of this service to all international airports across the Maldives in 2026. The E-Gates are expected to enhance convenience for both Maldivian and international passengers, reducing waiting times at border control by allowing passports to be scanned once and authorised through facial recognition when crossing the border.

Designed to accommodate 7 million passengers annually, the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) opened on 26 July 2025, and has already introduced several modern, cutting-edge services to the Maldives. The initiative builds on the Maldives 2.0 policy, under which the Government is prioritising the digitisation of public services to deliver faster and more efficient experiences for travellers.
