President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced new measures to address the issue of prolonged pre-trial detention. Following consultations with relevant authorities, the President stated that restrictions on remand will be mitigated through conditions issued by the court, incorporating the use of electronic monitoring mechanisms.
The announcement was made via the President’s official X account, where he emphasized that the initiative would help alleviate many of the challenges associated with extended pre-trial detention. He also noted that individuals who meet the eligibility criteria would have their remand periods reviewed in accordance with the conditions set by the court.
The President held discussions with key authorities on May 8, 2025, in response to concerns raised by advocates calling for an end to prolonged detention. The meeting focused on developing an electronic monitoring system aimed at providing eligible individuals with a chance through a supervised release mechanism.
