Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef departed for an official visit to Hawaii, USA, on Thursday, at the special invitation from the Blue Planet Alliance.
The Maldives is scheduled to join the alliance during the visit, and the Vice President will deliver an address at the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme ceremony. He will also take part in various events held on the sidelines of the programme.
The Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme offers the opportunity to engage with policy experts, utility executives, Civil Society Organisations, and climate-solution advocates, to find solutions in addressing the challenges in implementing renewable energy technology in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Senior Government officials and participants from civil society organisations from the Maldives will represent and participate in this fellowship program. This is the fourth cohort scheduled to take place from 18 May to 23 May 2025, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Blue Planet Alliance advocates for islands and countries around the world to make the transition to renewable energy through capacity building and collaboration with financial institutions to mobilise funding for technology deployment.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set a goal to generate 33 per cent of the Maldives electricity needs from renewable sources by 2028. In this regard, a roadmap has been developed to achieve this ambitious goal, and several programmes have been launched in support of it. To date, 68 MW of solar PV has been installed, with additional initiatives in the pipeline.
