President Nasheed has arrived in Male’, this evening, after concluding his visit to Sweden and Sri Lanka.

On his arrival at the airport the President was greeted by members of the cabinet and other senior government officials while large crowds of members of the general public gathered near the official jetty to congratulate the President for having received this year’s Anna Lindh Prize.

Speaking to the media just after his arrival at the airport, the President said he was honoured to have received the Anna Lindh Prize and that the prize was a testament to the world’s recognition of the efforts of many Maldivians.

Briefing the media on his visit to Sweden, the President said that during the visit, he met with the King of Sweden, the Minister of Environment and other senior officials of the Swedish government, to discuss the impact of climate change in the Maldives. The President added that he explored ways of seeking assistance to combat climate change.

Speaking on his visit to Sri Lanka, the President said that he met with the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and congratulated the government of Sri Lanka for their tremendous success in effecting an end to the decades-old conflict in their country. He also noted that this visit was his first visit to Sri Lanka after the conflict ended.

At the press conference, the President also took questions from the media.
