President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has shared a message on the occasion of World Day of Social Justice.

The President's message reads as follows:

Quote:

As we mark the 'World Day of Social Justice', we are dedicated to promoting fairness, equality and justice for all. Today we must reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where social equity and environmental sustainability are in harmony.

This year's theme, 'Strengthening a Just Transition for a Sustainable Future' resonates deeply with the Maldives, a small island developing state, aligning with both our national priorities and global aspirations. This theme recognises the challenges that come with ensuring environmental sustainability alongside the rapid pace of economic development.

The Maldives became a member of the Global Coalition for Social Justice in July 2024, joining efforts to advance social justice through collective action, strengthen societal resilience, and improve the coherence between cross-sectoral policies and foster dialogue for shared prosperity.

In the Maldives, we are making bold strides to transform our economy and future development trajectory. As such, we have set ambitious development goals, to improve the lives of everyone living in our geographically dispersed islands. Furthermore, the Government is committed to transforming the urban landscape, through the development of Ras Malé and other urban centres across the Maldives. We are committed to ensuring that our economic growth is aligned with environmental sustainability, especially given the vulnerability of our islands to climate change. To this end, Ras Malé will serve as a pioneering Eco-City, setting new sustainability standards while addressing critical housing needs and fostering economic prosperity for our citizens.

Our ambition to achieve a low-carbon economy must include all and benefit all. From policies targeting increasing renewable energy sources in our country up to 33 per cent by 2028, and through initiatives such as the Energy Roadmap 2024-2033, we are shifting towards decreasing our reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening energy security. Gender equality and social inclusion (GESI) are embedded into our approach, ensuring that policies promote inclusive outcomes. Coherent policies are being put in place across economic, environmental, social, educational, and labour sectors to drive this transition. This includes empowering MSMEs, workers, investors, and consumers to play an active role in shaping an inclusive and environmentally sustainable economy. We acknowledge the significance of creating opportunities for vulnerable groups, such as women, persons with disabilities, youth and the elderly, ensuring that no one is excluded from this transition.

Creating a strong social protection system is essential for ensuring a just transition. These systems will protect our communities from external shocks, economic risks and environmental challenges. The Government is dedicated to implementing community-focused, participatory governance, integrating traditional and indigenous knowledge to develop decentralised solutions across all levels. We intend to achieve this, by incorporating modern technologies and digitally transforming our society, to ensure a smart, safe and sustainable future for all.

Ultimately, the substantive realisation of a just future for all requires that we all work together. We must revive our traditional spirit of community, social cohesion, and look out for each other. We must draw lessons and strength from our past to create a better today, and an even brighter tomorrow for all.
