President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially designated Thaavathaa Island as part of Meedhoo Island and Ufulandhoo Island as part of Maduvvari Island, located in the Raa Atoll.
The President’s decision was announced in a Presidential Decree issued by the President’s Office today.
This change was implemented through amendments to Presidential Decree No. 02/2025, which was gazetted on February 5, 2025. These amendments were made under the Decentralization Act (Act No. 07/2010), utilising the powers vested in the President under Section 134 (a) of the Act.
The President had previously committed to addressing the issue of land constraints on both islands, highlighting the urgent need to relocate economic activities from the islands due to public health and safety concerns. In his remarks on the same day, the President further emphasised the necessity of relocating all non-residential facilities from the islands.
The President has been visiting the islands, engaging with the communities, understanding their challenges and most pressing needs, and working to efficiently resolve their issues.
