First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed stated on Wednesday evening that women’s health is not just a personal matter, but a cornerstone of strong families, thriving communities, and a resilient nation. She made the remarks while speaking as the Chief Guest at the Closing Ceremony of the Hiyala 2025 Surgical Workshop held at Dharumavantha Hospital.

Speaking at the event, the First Lady emphasised that the workshop, titled “Empowering Women’s Health: Through State-of-the-Art Minimally Invasive Surgery,” focused on advancing medical expertise in a crucial field, ensuring that Maldivians receive the highest quality healthcare. She said that the knowledge shared at the workshop would contribute to a future where women can access safer, more effective treatments, enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life.

The First Lady also emphasised that healthcare professionals are not only entrusted to treat the physical ailments of patients but also to understand and address their emotional and psychological needs. She added that empowering women’s health means providing holistic care that respects and honours their unique experiences and challenges.

She highlighted that nearly every woman experiences some form of gynaecological issue at some point in their life, adding to the many struggles they face in their daily lives. She noted that gynaecological surgeries are one of the most common types of surgery conducted in the country. She emphasised the importance of perfecting surgical techniques tailored specifically to women’s needs.

The First Lady shed light on the plight of women enduring invasive procedures that often require long recovery times, cause unnecessary pain, and carry the risk of complications. She added that women seek medical expertise from specialist doctors hoping for swift remedies, with minimal impact on their wellness, so they can return to their pivotal roles as mothers, leaders, entrepreneurs, and activists. Commending the initiative, the First Lady encouraged prioritising surgical advancements with the objective of minimising potential risks to women and enhancing their overall safety and well-being, with the least amount of stress to their bodies and lives.

The Hiyala 2025 surgical workshop was attended by medical professionals from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Tree Top Hospital (TTH), and Hulhumale’ Hospital.
