President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to commence the harbour expansion project of HA. Thakandhoo, in line with public aspirations. He made the pledge in his address to the residents of the island Wednesday afternoon.
In his address, the President said concurrent with the harbour expansion project, a sustainable solution would be found to the issue of erosion as well.
President Dr Muizzu stated that Thakandhoo was a vital component of national development and nationhood development, and as such, attention must be paid to the island. While the island is not populous, he said that the island boasted of a proud and ancient heritage and, as such, those aspects would be preserved while ushering in development.
The President, on Tuesday, had announced a two-year project of celebrating National Day in Utheemu island, as part of the Administration’s aims to promote national consciousness ideologically. This project, the President said, would be expanded to Thakandhoo and Baarah islands.
The President also announced that Thakandhoo and Maarandhoo would be added as new routes to the RTL ferry system before the start of Ramadan this year.
During his visit, the President attended the groundbreaking ceremonies for the new Secretariat building of the Thakandhoo Council office and the police station. He also attended the ceremony held to sign an agreement to establish a bank ATM on the island. The agreement was made between the Thakandhoo Council and the Bank of Maldives (BML).
