President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to include Ufulandhoo under R. Maduvvari's jurisdiction and R. Thaavathaa under R. Meedhoo's jurisdiction.
The announcement came during his meeting with Maduvvari residents as part of his ongoing visit to several islands in Raa Atoll.
In discussing potential solutions to the island's space constraints, he explained that the island is fully occupied and even the lagoon has limited space, limiting the potential gains from land reclamation.
However, he revealed that the Maduvvari land reclamation project has been included in this year's budget, with practical work set to begin this year following consultations with relevant ministries and the council.
The President stated that this project, scheduled for completion during his term, will address several issues, including the incomplete backfilling of the previously constructed harbour, inadequate protection against erosion, and the lack of vehicle access to the harbour's outer breakwater.
Despite these plans, he emphasised that adding just six hectares to the island would not resolve the land issue and proposed that relocating industrial activities outside the island would be the best solution, both practically and for public health.
Following this, the President announced the decision to include Ufulandhoo under R. Maduvvari's jurisdiction and R. Thaavathaa under R. Meedhoo's jurisdiction. He indicated that once the legal documentation is finalised, all facilities that do not need to be in residential areas should be relocated to these islands.
On the topic of housing projects, he announced plans to issue a tender this month to find a contractor for the housing project, which includes housing units for the island.
