President Dr Mohamed Muizzu observed a minute of silence this morning on the anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
The President, along with Cabinet Ministers, senior Government officials, and President’s Office staff, gathered in the grass field south of the President’s Office, the site of the former Huravee Building, to observe the minute of silence at 9:23 am—the recorded time the tsunami hit the Maldives in 2004. Several Government employees in Malé City also participated in the minute of silence near their workplaces.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which affected all inhabited islands except for nine. The tsunami claimed 82 lives, left 26 people missing, and displaced 15,000 in the Maldives. The Maldives celebrates National Unity Day on December 26 annually, in remembrance of the strong spirit of national unity and solidarity shown by the people in the immediate aftermath of the devastating tsunami in 2004.
