President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the 14th amendment bill to the Law no. 2/99, the Maldives Tourism Act. The bill was passed by the Parliament in the 44th sitting of the 20th Majlis, held on Thursday, 31st October 2024.
The passed amendment states that every financial year, Tourism Ministry, under the guidance of the President, must compile a comprehensive list of uninhabited islands, lands and lagoons that are to be leased. The amendment also states that this list would be subject to the Ministry’ review, under the approval of the President.
The amendment further clarifies the figure set as green tax, taken from every guest for every day of their stay, at tourist resorts, integrated tourist resorts, resort hotels, hotels, tourist guesthouses, tourist vessels and other similar properties.
Following the ratification, all relevant agencies are subject to compile relevant rules, regulations and guides, and amendments, and publish in the Government gazette within a period of 30 days. The ratified amendment bill has now been published on the Government gazette.
