President His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu, has departed Baku, Azerbaijan following his visit to the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

At COP29, the President emphasised the urgent need for enhanced climate finance, calling on the international community to translate pledges into action for countries most at risk from climate impacts. In his addresses, he stressed the challenges the Maldives faces as a low-lying island nation and underscored the importance of decisive global measures to limit warming and support adaptation efforts.

On the sidelines of the conference, the President engaged in high-level discussions with several world leaders, where he discussed advancing areas of mutual interest, and advocated to strengthen global effort for climate change mitigation. These dialogues aimed at enhancing cooperation in tackling shared challenges and in mobilising resources to meet climate goals.

President Dr Muizzu also participated in side events, where he championed Maldives’ climate initiatives and highlighted the country’s ambitions for sustainable development. He reiterated the need for robust financial and technical support to help the Maldives and other SIDS achieve its development targets, especially in renewable energy, climate adaptation, and resilience-building efforts.

This official visit to COP29 reaffirms President Dr Muizzu’s leadership on climate change on the global stage, advocating for policies that address both the immediate and long-term needs of SIDS and other developing nations.
