President His Excellency Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced today that the Maldives has intervened in the ongoing case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Gaza.
In a post on his official ‘X’ account, President Dr Muizzu stated, "The #Maldives, pursuant to Article 63 of the @CIJ_IC Statute, filed the declaration of intervention to the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa vs. Israel)."
President Dr Muizzu also stated that “Israel must be held accountable for its unlawful acts in Gaza." He emphasised the urgent need to uphold the rule of law, demanding an end to the genocidal acts against the Palestinian people.
Reaffirming the nation's commitment to humanitarian values, President Dr Muizzu asserted that the Maldives will always side with humanity, peace and justice. He also pledged ongoing support for the Palestinian cause.
President Muizzu's statement went beyond the immediate legal action, calling for the recognition and establishment of Palestine "based on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital."
The Maldives' intervention in this high-profile case, initially brought by South Africa against Israel, aligns with its longstanding support for Palestinian statehood.
