President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the development of at least 20 resorts across the nation will be initiated within the year, benefiting the entire nation. The President made the remarks while speaking with Madifushi Island residents while visiting the island on his tour of the islands in Kolhumadulu Atoll.
The President reiterated the Administration’s commitment to assist the people of Madifushi Island in achieving their envisioned development. He then relayed the Administration's particular focus on developing the tourism industry. He further revealed his vision to make the Maldives an appealing tourism product that is self-sustainable and respected among investors.
Speaking at the meeting, the President urged the council to prioritise the developmental projects initiated on the island in order of significance. He assured the Administration would prioritise the preferences conveyed by the councils in running the projects.
President Dr Muizzu detailed the Administration's stance on decentralised governance. He said that the Government would empower councils and foster economic progress. The President emphasised that the Administration would seek to financially empower councils by allowing councils to generate revenue from islands within its jurisdiction for greater fiscal autonomy. He added that arrangements for nearby islands to be brought under the jurisdiction of councils would foster fiscal autonomy. He delved into the specifics of procuring land from distant atolls to ensure that such islands reap the benefits.
Speaking on the Government's focus on alleviating the housing situation, the President revealed plans to introduce loans. The President also emphasised that the Administration is working on improving the financial condition of state-owned enterprises.
Madifushi residents conveyed their most pertinent needs to the President at the meeting. Some key concerns raised by the residents included the need for road development, inadequate housing, and the addition of Uhuriya and Kolhufushi under Madifushi jurisdiction. They highlighted the need for coastal protection, clean drinking water provision, and expediting ongoing development projects on the island. Furthermore, the residents proposed joining Dhiyamigili and Madifushi via a causeway.
Madifushi Island is the third destination of the President's ongoing three-day tour of Kolhumadulu Atoll, accompanied by a delegation of high-level Government officials.
