President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih highlighted on Saturday the role of developmental projects, job creation, and human resources development in driving national progress. He was speaking at the inauguration of the newly upgraded harbour on Dharanboodhoo Island in the Faafu Atoll.
The President was joined at the inauguration ceremony by First Lady Fazna Ahmed, Cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, and senior government officials, in addition to the staff of government offices and institutions and members of the residential community.
Speaking at the function, the President highlighted that the congestion in Malé City stemmed from past policies that focused on centralisation, attracting people to the capital for even the most essential services and employment opportunities. He expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions in Malé City and emphasised that the key to resolving congestion lies in developing other regions to enhance livability and provide viable alternatives.
The President highlighted the administration's focus on developing human resources in tandem with infrastructure projects to meet growing demands. President Solih emphasised the significance of continuous investment in human resource development as a critical factor in maintaining sustainable national progress. The President also observed that the absence of employment opportunities and sources of income on the islands had been a driving factor behind the historical migration trend towards Malé City.
Highlighting the achievements of 36 island residents who successfully obtained their degrees through the administration's free degree programme, the President expressed optimism for a promising future for the island. He emphasised the importance of retaining individuals on the island to drive its developmental prospects forward.
The President acknowledged the administration's substantial progress in fulfilling its commitments to Dharanboodhoo Island. He emphasised that despite the achievements, the island community may still need to meet needs, urging residents to communicate any additional requirements or requests.
The contract for developing Dharanboodhoo Island's harbour was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The project has a value of MVR45.9 million.
