First Lady and Chief Guide Fazna Ahmed was presented on Saturday with the Asia Pacific Region Appreciation Award in the "Individual" category, the highest honour by the Asia Pacific Region of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. The award was presented to the First Lady at the 2022 Annual General Meeting of the Maldives Girl Guide Association. The AGM was held at the Customs Building.
The First Lady was presented with the most prestigious honour for her immense contributions to the girl guide movement and her crucial role as the Chief Guide in expanding the scope of the movement in the Maldives. She is the first Maldivian to receive the award in the individual category.
The First Lady joined the girl guide movement in school and continued to serve in various roles before taking over as the Chief Guide. She is a philanthropist, engaging in advocacy and awareness campaigns, including campaigns against violence.
The First Lady also played a pivotal role in the Girl Guide movement as part of the Covid-19 emergency response and other disasters and emergencies. She also represented the Girl Guide Association in the international community.
At the ceremony, the Asia Pacific Area Appreciation Award was presented to four organisations and five companies in honour of their contributions to the girl guide movement. The awards were presented to the recipients by Firasha Mohamed, an Asia Pacific Region Committee member.
First Lady and Chief Guide Fazna Ahmed presented certificates to the recipients of warrant certificates, followed by the presentation of commissioner diplomas and girl scout association appreciation medals to the recipients by Niumaath Shafeeq, the Chief Commissioner.
At the ceremony, service awards were also presented to 75 individuals who had served between five and 30 years. The Minister of State for Education, Fathimath Naseer, presented the awards to the recipients.
