Vice President Faisal Naseem inaugurated the Four Nations Cup 2023 volleyball tournament on Thursday, the first international sporting event hosted in the Maldives this year. It is the first international volleyball tournament hosted in the Maldives over the past 14 years; the last tournament was held in 2009.
Over the past four years, the administration has made great strides in delivering on its key priority and pledge of hosting international sports tournaments and promoting sports tourism. The administration hosted nine international sporting events in the Maldives in 2022. Through these tournaments, the administration seeks to allow local athletes to compete on the international stage.
The Four Nations Cup 2023 volleyball tournament features Singapore, Malaysia, Afghanistan, and the Maldives. While all four countries compete in the men's division, the women's division features Singapore, Malaysia, and the Maldives.
The administration is also taking steps to provide equal opportunities for the development of all sports. Over the past four years, the Maldives have won 33 gold, 18 silver, and 88 bronze medals in international sports tournaments.
