President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assured the people on Saturday of the administration's commitment to delivering the developmental aspirations and progress envisioned by the people. He made the statement while speaking at a function on Nilandhoo Island in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll to inaugurate the new powerhouse and administrative building.
The new powerhouse was developed by state-owned utility provider FENAKA Corporation Ltd. Speaking at the function, President Solih recalled that most islands lacked essential services when his administration took office four years ago. He added that previous governments had failed to provide adequate electricity, water, sewerage, education, or healthcare services to the residents of the islands.
The President noted that most island communities had previously relied on generator sets they funded to generate electricity. The President stated that his administration's policy was to promote equitable development and provide essential services to all islands, regardless of size or population.Over the past four years, the administration has brought revolutionary changes to electricity services across the country by providing 144 new generator sets and building new powerhouses and administrative buildings on 46 islands through FENAKA.
The new powerhouse on Nilandhoo Island, designed to accommodate three 400 kW generator sets, can currently generate 1,050 kW of power. The old powerhouse, located in the residential area, was 22 years old. The new powerhouse is, however, located away from the residential area. After inaugurating the new powerhouse, President Solih toured the facility.
The President is on Nilandhoo Island as part of a three-island tour of the Gaafu Alifu Atoll. On Friday, he visited Dhaandhoo Island and will travel to Maamendhoo Island later today.
