The President meets with island council and WDC members of G.A. Dhaandhoo Island: Members note substantial developmental progress under this administration

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met on Saturday with the island council and Women's Development Committee (WDC) members of Dhaandhoo Island in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll. The meeting was held at the Secretariat of the Dhaandhoo Island Council.

Speaking with the President, the council members noted that the island had seen substantial developmental progress under his administration and extended their gratitude. They highlighted that President Solih's visit to the island was the first by a sitting president over the past ten years and noted the support of government offices and institutions for the developmental progress of the island.

The discussions at the meeting focused on the island community's most pertinent needs and concerns. On Friday evening, the President attended a function to officially hand over 25 hectares of newly reclaimed land on Dhaandhoo Island to the island council. At the meeting, the council members spoke about expediting the provision of electricity, water supply, and a sewerage network to the new land.

The council members also requested the inclusion of Dhoregala, an uninhabited island, under the council's jurisdiction, expediting the development of Vodumula as a tourist resort, and arranging access to the beach in the reclaimed area. Discussions about relocating the powerhouse and the proposed amendments to the road construction and harbour development projects were also held. The council members also requested the introduction of computer sciences and ICT at the school.

Speaking with the President, members of the WDC highlighted the need to introduce higher education opportunities with the establishment of a Maldives National University (MNU) campus, develop a detoxification centre, and require equipment for an indoor gym.

At the meeting, President Solih shared the latest details of the administration's developmental plans for the island. He also assured the members of the administration's commitment to finding amicable solutions to the concerns of the island's residents.

Dhaandhoo Island is President Solih’s first stop on his visit to Gaafu Alifu Atoll. He will then travel to the Nilandhoo and Maamendhoo Islands. A high-level government delegation is accompanying him on the visit.
