President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met on Saturday with the island council and the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members of Madduvari Island in the Meemu Atoll. The meeting was held in the afternoon at the Secretariat of the Maduvvari Island Council.
At the meeting, the council members highlighted that the majority of the island's developmental projects have been initiated under the current administration and expressed their gratitude to the President. They also shared with the President the community’s most pertinent needs and concerns. Discussions at the meeting centred on challenges faced due to coastal erosion, storm surges, and the design of the harbour; addressing space constraints at the school; and the need for a youth centre.
The harbour development project of the island was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company PLC (MTCC). Commencement of the project is behind schedule due to disagreements within the community over the design of the harbour. The President said the project would only proceed with the community’s input. Water and sewerage development projects are also underway on the island.
After the meeting, the President met with the island’s resident community. He is on an official visit to five islands in the Meemu Atoll. A senior delegation from the government is accompanying him on this visit.
