President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday evening attended a dinner hosted to mark the closing of the "UNWTO Global Summit on Community-based Tourism." Vice President Faisal Naseem joined him at the dinner held at CROSSROADS Maldives.
Organised jointly by the Ministry of Tourism and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the two-day summit featured discussions on the contribution of community-based tourism to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the accompanying challenges and opportunities from the perspectives of the diverse actors across the tourism value chain. The first day of the summit saw a ministerial debate on community-based tourism. It was followed on Thursday by three thematic sessions: on Gastronomy Tourism, Agro-Tourism, and Community-based Tourism.
The summit was geared toward ministers and officials from UNWTO member countries, international organisations, industry experts and professionals, and local associations from the tourism sector. The summit was held in the Maldives this year as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the introduction of tourism.
