On Sunday afternoon, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih met with the members of the Island Council, the Women's Development Committee (WDC), and residents of Kurendhoo Island in the Lhaviyani Atoll. The meeting with the community leaders was held at Kurendhoo School as part of his ongoing visit to six islands in the atoll.
Outlining the developmental needs of the island at the meeting, members of the council and WDC highlighted the need for improving healthcare services, building additional classrooms at the school, and developing roads. They also shared with the President their concerns about harbour utilisation and highlighted the requirements of the youth, including upgrading the football stadium and developing a youth centre. They also noted the need for a building for the council secretariat.
Speaking with the community leaders, President Solih stated that the administration’s developmental projects aim at achieving the deliverables sought by the people and that he values the participation and views of the people. He further revealed that the administration would look into solutions to remedy the concerns raised at the meeting.
At his meeting with the residents of the island, President Solih extended his gratitude for the hearty welcome he received before giving details of the administration’s developmental plans for the island. Highlighting housing needs on the island, the President revealed plans to carry out a housing project there and announced plans to conduct technical studies this year required before harbour expansion work.
President Solih went on to reveal plans to renovate the football grounds, damaged following tidal surges, and develop additional facilities, including stands and changing rooms. On coastal erosion, the President said a beach area would be developed as part of the coastal protection project.
Highlighting other projects, President Solih said the new powerhouse developed by FENAKA Corporation would soon be made operational, while road development works are scheduled to commence with the completion of the water and sewerage network project. He then reiterated his commitment to expediting ongoing developmental projects.
On Kurendhoo Island, the last leg of his six-island visit to the Lhaviyani Atoll, President Solih visited and met with the management and staff of the health centre. He was accompanied on the trip by a high-level delegation from the government.
