As part of his ongoing three-day trip to the Lhaviyani Atoll, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Sunday afternoon met with members of the Island Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) of Olhuvelifushi Island. The meeting was held at the Resource Centre on the island.
At the meeting, the members discussed with the President developmental plans for the island and conferred their concerns and most pertinent needs. Issues raised at the meeting relate to harbour expansion, addressing coastal erosion, improving banking services and issues faced due to land scarcity, including housing needs and space constraints at the Secretariat of the Island Council. The need for designated office space was also echoed by the WDC members.
Speaking with the members, President Solih expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received upon arrival and assured them that he would discuss their concerns with the relevant authorities and find solutions.
Afterwards, President Solih spent some time with the island’s residents, where he shared developmental plans for the island with them. He highlighted the installation of turf on the football ground, upgrades to the powerhouse and the installation of solar panels with a capacity to generate 80 kilowatts of energy and added that the administration aims to power the island through solar energy.
President Solih also revealed that to accommodate single-session schooling, 10 classrooms would be built at the school, instead of the eight planned earlier. Furthermore, the extension of the island’s health centre and introducing additional services were also discussed.
Relaying from his discussion with members of the Island Council and WDC, President Solih said that he would facilitate the development of a gym and stated that work would commence to improve the harbour as per the council’s requests, after necessary technical studies. During his visit to Olhuvelifushi Island, the President also toured the school and health centre and spoke with the management and staff.
President Solih would be visiting Kurendhoo Island as the last leg of his ongoing tour of the Lhaviyani Atoll. Over the weekend, he travelled to Madivaru, Hinnavaru, Felivaru, and Naifaru Islands. The President is accompanied by ministers and government officials.
