President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged all councillors to deliberate dialogue with their constituents prior to conducting any major projects on the islands. He made this remark at the inaugural Councillors Conference ‘Viavathi Raajje’ which concluded successfully this evening.

One of the major breakthroughs of the conference was the President ratifying the 8th amendment of the Decentralization Act. The new amendments now empower the councils with legal and fiscal autonomy in developing their individual constituencies.

'Viavathi Raajje' was aimed to create awareness among councillors on the challenges of governance and the development of constituencies while assisting councillors to assume their new roles and responsibilities through the transition.

Another major milestone of the conference was the launching of the 'Isles' website which publishes the latest updates and information on all projects ongoing on every island including the project owner, project status and funding details. Moreover, the website also gives out general data on the census, islands, population, information on councillors and parliament members and general contact details from the same platform.

During the launch of the website, President Solih stated that all constituents will now have easy access to the latest updates and information on every project that’s ongoing on every island from the same platform.
Delivering the concluding remarks of the conference, President Solih emphasised the importance of conducting more conferences in the future and also the importance of the central government and councils working together to achieve more productive developmental outcomes.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih chaired all sessions of the conference while panellists at the sessions included the Speaker of the Parliament and former President, Mohamed Nasheed, cabinet ministers and senior officials of the government.
During the sessions, councillors shared their experiences and question and answer sessions were also conducted allowing councillors to query panellists on pertinent issues.
