Vice President Faisal Naseem has visited Kulhudhuffushi Island of Haa Dhaalu Atoll and met with the Island Council. The Vice President visited Kulhudhuffushi Island this morning, as part of his ongoing two-day visit to some islands of Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu Atolls.

Discussions at the meeting were focussed on developmental plans for the island and concerns from residents. Some of the concerns raised by the Councillors include challenges to implementing proper waste management, human resource development and difficulties faced by the Council due to space constraints.

Speaking during the meeting, the Vice President emphasised that local councils would be granted more fiscal and legal autonomy with the Administration’s proposed amendments to the Decentralisation Act. He said that Kulhudhuffushi Island Council would be able to address most of the challenges faced by the residents with the amendment to the law.

He further urged the Island Council to increase participation of the residents in regional development, and promote a more caring and compassionate community. He also stressed the importance of according special attention to people with special needs.

Following the meeting, the Vice President visited Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital and inaugurated the ‘Hithaanee Camp.’ Speaking during a meeting with the management of the hospital, the Vice President noted the Administration’s efforts to improve healthcare services across the country. Highlighting the large number of patients seeking medical attention at the hospital, the Vice President urged all health sector staff to be more empathetic and caring.

During his visit to Kulhudhuffushi Island, the Vice President also visited the Family and Children Service Centre and inquired about its services.
