Vice President Faisal Naseem has met members of the Mulaku Atoll Council this afternoon at the President’s Office.
Discussions at the meeting were focused on the developmental plans for the atoll and pertinent issues for its residents. Some of the issues discussed during the meeting include challenges to providing proper water and sanitation services, harbour renovation and development, coastal protection, difficulties faced due to land constraints and implementing proper waste management.
Councillors representing the island councils also shared information about some of the most pertinent issues faced by its residents; fishing is a major livelihood of the residents and fishermen face difficulties in selling their catch, which could be addressed by developing a fish processing plant in the atoll; planned airport development project would ease transportation issues faced by the islands; in addition to land reclamation to alleviate space constraints. The Councillors also highlighted on health and education sector development and other programmes aimed at the betterment of the communities.
Speaking at the meeting, the Vice President stated that the administration aspires to commence water and sanitation projects in every island during its tenure. He also shared details of developmental plans which have been earmarked so far.
Moreover, the Vice President said that the administration seeks ways to expedite all developmental projects and assured that the administration would work with relevant stakeholders to address the issues highlighted by the Councillors. He further urged all Councillors to give precedence to infrastructural and socio-economic development that is beneficial for the citizens, while emphasising on prioritising education and proper upbringing of the future generations.
