The President has today met with the UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, Mr Daniel Toll. The meeting was held at the President’s Office.
Speaking at the meeting the President noted that UNICEF was an important development partner of the Maldives, and thanked the Fund for its positive engagements in the Maldives. Highlighting the high priority accorded by the government to protect the rights of children, the President said it was important to train the judicial authorities on juvenile justice. Furthermore, he requested the UNICEF to continue and widen its programmes to create greater awareness among the people on nutritious food.
Mr Toll noted the fact that the Government was carrying out programmes focusing on the development of children. Further, he expressed his satisfaction on the high priority that the Government attached to fulfilling its obligation under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
In the meeting, Mr Tool noted the important work that the Government was carrying out across the country to raise the standards of education as well as programmes to educate, train and engage the youth, in order to increase their productivity and contribution to national development.
