President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Monday has forwarded the names of Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Uza. Aisha Shujoon Mohamed to the People's Majlis regarding appointing them to the Supreme Court.

The President has done this under the powers vested in him under article 148 (a) of the Maldivian Constitution, authorizing the President to appoint judges to the Supreme Court after consulting the JSC and with the approval of the majority of the People's Majlis present and voting. The aforementioned names were sent to JSC last Thursday, and was today forwarded to the Majlis along with three other recommendations from the JSC; Mr Shuaib Hussain Zakariyya from Male', Dhafthar number 6993, Mr Mohamed Niyaz from Greenvilla, Haa Dhaalu Vaikaradhoo, and Mr Ali Sameer from Ma. Waveside, Male'.

President Solih ratified the 3rd amendment to the Judicature Act (Act No. 22/2010), on 23rd July 2019, paving the way to increase the number of Judges residing on the Supreme Court bench from five, to seven.
