With the Government’s strengthening of laws and regulations designed to increase the transparency and competiveness of bidding processes for awarding projects, the costs borne by the state to implement such projects have been reduced by 50% according President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. He made these remarks this morning whilst giving a speech to the inhabitants of Bilehdhoo Island of North Nilandhe Atoll.

During the President’s speech he highlighted as an example that previous attempts to implement sewerage systems in the Maldives had cost the state up to 27 million rufiyaa but with changes in laws and regulations pertinent to bidding processes the cost had been reduced to 27 million rufiyaa.

The government is eager to involve citizens and incorporate their input as we strive to accomplish all our development pledges. This is why the government will prioritize ensuring a competitive and transparent framework relevant to bidding for all development projects.

To ensure transparency, since 28th January of this year the government has ensured a policy of unsolicited proposals for all public projects. Under this policy, information regarding proposals that have been opened for direct discussion and those that have reached an agreement stage will be published on the Ministry of Economic Development’s website. The information published will include details of the bidder, and the scope of the proposal submitted.
