His Excellency Mr. Kazumi Endo, Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

السّــلام عليــكم ورحـمــة اللّـه وبـركاتـه.

Konbanwa, and a very good evening to you all

It is an honour and a privilege for me to be here on this very special occasion, celebrating the birthday of His Majesty Emperor Akihito.

On behalf of the President of the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the people of the Maldives, I have the pleasure to extend heartfelt greetings and sincere best wishes, to His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, members of the Imperial Family, and the friendly people of Japan on this auspicious and joyful occasion.

Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,

The age-old bonds of friendship between the Maldives and Japan are anchored on decades of trust, understanding and mutual respect. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1967, the Maldives and Japan have enjoyed a dynamic and vibrant relationship that is both unique and special. This relationship is not just between our Governments, but also between the people of two countries.

Since the arrival of the very first Japanese tourists in the Maldives several decades ago, Japan remains as one of the most important contributors to the Maldivian economy. The special love of our friends from the land of the magnificent Mount Fuji, towards our low lying islands and underwater coral gardens, is testimony to a relationship that respects diversity and appreciate each other’s uniqueness.

Japan also remains as an important development partner of the Maldives. The strong commitment of Japan to help the Maldives and the generosity of the Japanese people, is visible in every corner of our country. It is visible from the schools where generations of Maldivians have studied at. From the sea walls that protect the residents of the capital Male’ to the Social Centre that has been a hub for community spirit. It is visible from the countless assistance given to strengthen the resilience of our islands against climate change, to the quality infrastructure gifted to the fishing and broadcasting industry. It can also be seen from the large numbers of Maldivians who have benefitted from the trainings offered by JICA, and the continuous and tireless work of the JOCV volunteers.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, with the Government of President, His Excellency Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the Maldives has crossed over to a new dawn. One that epitomises the ideals of democracy, fortifying of relationship with our neighbours and in bolstering our role in maintaining peace and harmony in our region and the world. These are ideals that the Maldives shares with Japan. As we look towards the future and continue to work together on issues of mutual interest bilaterally and multilaterally, we remain confident that the historic relationship between our two countries will reach new heights.

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

As I conclude, allow me once again express sincere best wishes for the good health of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan, and the people of Japan. Let me also convey sincere gratitude of the Maldivian people, for the unwavering friendship and continuous support of Japan to the Maldives. May this relationship continue to prosper and reach new heights in the days to come.

I wish you all a very wonderful evening.

Arigatou gozaimasu.
