President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that his aim is to commence clean water and sewerage projects in all inhabited islands within the first three years of his administration. The President made this statement while addressing the people of Dhiffushi Island today, as part of his visit to the island.
Speaking at the function, the President reiterated that the administration will put in every effort to fulfill his electoral pledge of ensuring clean water and proper sewerage systems for every Maldivian citizen, by the end of his 5 year term. He also noted that clean water is currently available in only 34 inhabited islands, while sewerage system is established in only 66 islands, pointing out that with regard to the country’s revenue, it was not a reasonable figure.
Continuing on, President Solih stated that in the 2019 budget, USD 102 million has been allocated to the establishment of basic utilities across the country. In this regard, the President said that projects have been planned for the establishment of sewerage systems in 72 islands, and clean water systems in 56 islands.
In his speech, President Solih highlighted the need for a viable business environment for entrepreneurs, and assured that this administration was ready to formulate a mechanism that would ensure complete legal protection for their investments.
Further, President Solih reiterated the administration’s commitment to working close to the people and being transparent in its ventures. In this regard, the President announced that starting next week, the Finance Ministry will publicize the country’s financial status on a weekly basis.
The President also spoke of his hopes to facilitate a blissful life for the Maldivian people. In this regard, the President said that it was his aim to facilitate the local councils to develop the country as part of decentralized governance, and amend the Decentralization Act in an effort to empower the councils and best provide the true island life for the people.
