President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that it is the youth’s expectations that define the people’s demands, and that the youth’s energy fuels the rate of progress of the Maldives. The President made this statement while addressing the people of Hinnavaru Island of Faadhippolhu Atoll this morning, following the inauguration of the island’s clean drinking water services.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Yameen thanked USAID and the United States of America, for their contributions towards making the lives and livelihoods of Maldivians better – especially noting that the water treatment plant in Hinnavaru was a shining example of US assistance.
The clean drinking water plant developed in Hinnavaru Island runs on 100% daytime energy acquired from solar cells, and will provide clean water to the populace from rain water treatment, in addition to desalinated water. This project will also provide more job opportunities for the local populace.
In his speech, the President extended his appreciation to UNOPS for their assistance in realizing the project, and shed light on the historical USAID contributions, noting that his education in the US was facilitated through such aid – as such the President expressed special thanks to the US both personally and on behalf of the Maldives, and its people.
Furthermore, the President highlighted the efforts being taken by the administration, in realizing the developmental aspirations for the people. In this regard, President Yameen underscored that the administration seeks various sources of funding, including loans, to carry out the developmental projects for the country.
In his speech, the President also reiterated the administration’s commitment to upholding and promoting Islamic values in the Maldives.
The President is currently on a 3 day visit to South Miladhummadulu Atoll, Faadhippolhu Atoll and South Maalhosmadulu Atoll.
