President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has this evening met with the Maldivian community residing in UAE, as part of his current official visit to the country. The President was accompanied by First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim.
Addressing the gathering this evening, the President underlined that the best ambassadors weren’t necessarily professional diplomats, but those who exemplify professionalism and excellence while abroad. He reminded all Maldivians to demonstrate respect for the norms and cultures of their country of residence, and expressed pride that Maldivians in the UAE were recognised as valued individuals.
In his speech, President Yameen reiterated the administration’s commitment to curb terrorism and extremism. He pointed out that the community was also a key partner in such efforts.
The President spoke candidly about Maldives’ potential to be a viable international port; while addressing current challenges in the area. He also spoke about creating a positive investment climate in the Maldives, noting that Maldives’ aspirations should be to emulate the successes of nations like the UAE.
The President is currently on a 2-day official visit to UAE, where he will meet key leaders in order to further strengthen and diversify trade, increase technical and financial assistance, and further accelerate socioeconomic ties between the UAE and the Maldives.
