The Minister of Foreign Affairs H.E Dr Mohamed Asim in his capacity as a Special Envoy of the President of Maldives, called on the President of Sri Lanka, H.E Maithripala Sirisena this morning in Colombo.

During the call, Foreign Minister Dr. Asim conveyed sincere sympathies and heartfelt condolences of the Government and the People of Maldives to the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, especially to those directly affected by the flooding and landslides caused by the heavy torrential rains. Foreign Minister also commended on the quick action in assisting the people affected by this disaster and expressed hope in the success of every relief and recovery efforts.

President Sirisena thanked Maldives for its solidarity with Sri Lanka at this time of national distress and conveyed sincere appreciation for the financial assistance by the Government of Maldives for the relief efforts in Sri Lanka.

President of Sri Lanka during the call reflected on the good bilateral relations Sri Lanka has with the Maldives and discussed ways to strengthen the existing bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Foreign Minister Asim was accompanied at the call by Ambassador of Maldives to Sri Lanka, Her Excellency Zahiya Zareer, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Aminath Abdullah Didi and Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Maldives, Ms. Khadeeja Najeeha.
