President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has announced that discussions were underway to establish a world class football training school in the Maldives, under the administration’s youth manifesto. The President made this announcement while speaking at a function held to celebrate local football club TC Sports Club’s achievements. The club has won the Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup 2017 held in Bangladesh earlier this year.
In his speech, the President stated that the most articulate and greatest message conveyed by sports was unity, and working as a team to reach the top. Continuing in this regard, the President reminded all sportsmen that the two most important aspects to hold on to were to work hard as one team under the coach’s instructions, and to always aim for the highest position.
Speaking at the function, Minister of Youth and Sports Irthisham Adam expressed her appreciation to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom for the numerous measures taken for the advancement of the sports in the country. She noted that President Yameen has initiated the professionalization of athletes in the senior national squads, for the first time in Maldivian sports history.
The President was accompanied at the function by members of the Cabinet and members of the Parliament.
