The President, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that responsible democracy is not only protesting to protect a right and that it is acceptable to protest as long as one does not cross legal boundaries in the name of Politics. He reassured the public that the laws and regulations of Maldives would catch if lines were crossed and that it was his duty to make sure that such actions remained within limits. He stated this while speaking at the function held at Kalhuthukkalaa Koshi to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

While speaking at the ceremony the President highlighted that Democracy does not protect only political rights, but that democracy is a system that fulfils several aspirations.

Speaking more on democracy and its principles, the President quoted that a just peace includes not only civil and political rights; it must secure economic securities and opportunities.

Speaking along these lines the President deliberated on the duties of the armed forces to protect civilian lives, and properties, and to uphold the peace of the country.
