Peace and harmony of a community is defined by the efficiency of its Police Force – President Yameen

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the peace and harmony of a community is defined by the efficiency of its police force, and that unrest in a community brings to question, the performance of the police. He made this remark while speaking at the ceremony held to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Maldives Police Service.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President stated that the peace and harmony of a community was in the hands of the police, and pointed out that today peace has been restored in the Maldives. Highlighting the scope of the work done by the Maldives Police Service today, the President noted that their work wasn’t a stereotypical desk job anymore. The President commended the police service for their work done in collaboration with other countries and the Interpol, in battling cross border terrorism, cybercrime and all other cross border crimes. He stated that no community could maintain their peace without police, pointing out that the Police worked tirelessly around the clock, throughout the year.

He reminded all police officers to be patient in performing their duties and to always keep in mind that their service was for the whole community.

President Yameen underlined the current political situation in the Maldives and condemned the actions of certain political figures trying to bring unrest to the country. He noted that it must be a challenge for the police officers to listen to their former seniors demeaning the service.

Further, President Yameen noted that some external parties were issuing statements commenting on the internal workings of the country. He pointed out that the Maldives had principles of its own and that there was no fair reason to compare them with those of other nations.

At the ceremony, a shield of honour was awarded to former Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Umar Zahir, for his cooperation and support to the Maldives Police Service. The President expressed his gratitude to the former minister for his invaluable services to this date.

Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed and Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef also delivered speeches at the 84th anniversary function of the Maldives Police Service attended by cabinet ministers and senior officials of the Police Service.
