Well the idea is that the rest of the world listens to us and we are actually trying to let world know what is happening and what might and will happen to the Maldives if climate change is not checked. This is a challenging situation and we want to see that everyone else is also occupied as much as we are, and would like to see people actually do something about this. If Maldives cannot be saved today, we do not feel that there is much of a chance for the rest of the world. So it's a serious issue and we should take serious note of it.
This is the world's first island cabinet and this the first time you did not get a chance to speak. What was the experience like?
Well actually we did speak because there was enough sign language for us to go around, I believe yes we were able to finish the declaration which was to give the message and sometimes silence is important. It speaks much more than what you could actually say by lot of sounds.
What's your message to the world?
We have to have a better deal. We should be able to come out with an amicable understand so that everyone survives.
Sir what your massage to all the students?
That they should impress upon their leaders that here is a serous issue and they should take note of that.
Will this be a regular feature? Will there be an underwater cabinet meeting again? Would you try again?
Well we hope that this is not a regular feature, that this is the whole idea that this does not become a regular feature.
What do you think about your fellow cabinet ministers' diving techniques?
Cabinet ministers...well they are excellent. They are very good you know. I believe that we are all Maldivians and they are very good at diving and swimming.
We have been talking about the environmental issue for long time and I think because of what you has done this time, the world has got lot of attention on us. Because last two or three weeks daily about 12, 15 times media brings this up as a headline. You think what will be the benefit for our tourism and for our future industry regarding this?
Well I hope that people do take notice of this and what is happening to the world and the environment, and everything around us and I really do believe that this is a serious issue and people should take serious note of this.
If Copenhagen fails…what will happen then?
Well we are all going to die.
Do you think the world believes that there is a real threat here in the Maldives?
Well that is the idea that we can impress upon the world that there is a serious issue over here and that they take notice of that.
Can you speak about 350?
If we cannot reduce carbon emission to 350 parts per million, science is saying very obviously that the world is going to warm up about 1.5 degrees. If that happens we will not be around.
Will Maldives be the first country to sign up to Copenhagen as they did to Kyoto?
Well let's see how the Copenhagen comes out and if it is an amicable agreement an amicable paper to sign, of course the Maldives will sign.
Has Maldives honored all of its Kyoto commitments?
Yes, we have.
Thank you very much,
