Good morning everyone,
Thank you very much. I am sure that this website is going to assist us Maldivians who would want to travel to the Untied Kingdom for a number of reasons, and also to maintain our very good relations and build upon those relations through the website and through the facilities made available on the website.
Older generations would remember the last High Commissioner’s residence in Dhoonidhoo. But now we are being more imaginative here. It is not exactly in space, but more in the domain of the internet world. And therefore, we would be able to make use of these facilities and the administration made available through the website.
We are grateful to the British government for all the assistance, especially throughout the reform process, where they have been continuously engaged with both the government and the opposition. We do understand and we completely accept and feel that it is also important for the British government to be engaged with the present opposition. We hope that we will be able to move forward with the reform programme and get democracy consolidated here in the Maldives.
I have explained to the international community all the intricacies of the most recent developments, especially in terms of the Commission - the Corruption Commission - and other measures to strengthen independent institutions.
Also, we are highlighting issues of the judiciary, as well as the legislature. We are indeed very pleased because we have been able to come up and formulate the new Parliament as per the new Constitution.
It is a happy day for both countries and we believe that happier times lie ahead of us.
Thank you very much.
