President Mohamed Nasheed has met with Fuahmulah Crime Prevention Committee today.

At the meeting held at the President’s Office this afternoon, members of Fuahmulah Crime Prevention Committee expressed concern over the increase in incidence of drug abuse and drug related crimes, rape and other heinous crimes against women, gang violence and major criminal activities in the atoll.

Noting that a speedy passage of certain bills on preventing crime proposed to the People’s Majlis was vital to address the matter, they urged the members of the parliament to expedite work on these bills.

The Committee also appealed to all independent bodies and state institutions to take urgent measures to end major criminal and unlawful activities in Fuahmulah.

They also highlighted the importance of strengthening policing by providing more vehicles and necessary resources to increase police capabilities.

Members of the Fuahmulah Crime Prevention Committee said a major part of their efforts to reduce crime included averting youth from criminal activities and finding alternatives to occupy them in their spare time. They assured the President that they would work with all concerned authorities to work out programmes to reduce crime in Fuahmulah.

Speaking at the meeting, the President acknowledged the efforts by the Committee to reduce crime in the atoll and said he would assist in addressing the concerns raised by the Committee.

Further, the President said that crime prevention requires consistent and concerted effort by all the stakeholders, and all the government authorities would provide necessary assistance to reduce crime in Fuahmulah.

Fuahmulah Crime Prevention Committee has lodged an appeal signed by 1225 people of the atoll to the President calling for urgent measures to reduce drug abuse and drug related crimes, rape and sexual assault on women, and gang violence in Fuahmulah.
