President Mohamed Nasheed has today participated in the minute of silence observed to mark the anniversary of 2004 tsunami.

In the Maldives, 26 December, which is the anniversary of 2004 tsunami that caused loss of lives of many and widespread damage and destruction in the Maldives, is marked as the National Unity Day.

The minute of silence was observed throughout the Maldives today at 9.20am. President Nasheed joined the Maldives National Defence Force staff at Boduthakurufaanu Magu, in front of Kalhuthukkala Koshi, to observe the minute of silence.

Speaking after observing the minute of silence, President Nasheed noted that tsunami was the largest and most catastrophic natural disaster to ever hit the Maldives. He also spoke on the extensive damage and destruction caused by the tsunami in the Maldives.

Further, the President acknowledged the assistance provided by the Maldives National Defence Force, to the people of the country in their time of dire need following the tsunami.

In last week’s radio address, President Nasheed reaffirmed government’s continued commitment to providing permanent shelter for the remaining tsunami displaced persons.
