President Mohamed Nasheed today met with the Commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Admiral Robert F. Willard. The call was held at the President’s office this afternoon.

During the call Admiral Willard and the President Nasheed discussed ways of strengthening cooperation on areas of mutual concern such as maritime counterterrorism and piracy.

At the meeting the President noted that maritime safety was a great concern to the Maldives, and said that the assistance of the U.S. Navy in this regard was much appreciated.

The Admiral assured that the U.S. Navy would continue to work to ensure enhanced maritime safety and security in the region.
