President Mohamed Nasheed, in his weekly radio address, has said the government aimed to create and develop a marine life industry in the Maldives.

Speaking on the fisheries industry, President said it was now time to think long term and bring the necessary changes.

In this regard, he said in addition to the fish stock, we should also be able to make commercial use of other marine life.

He said, the government would therefore give greater focus to and facilitate aquaculture and mariculture projects in 2011.

He said the broadening of the fisheries sector to marine life industry would lessen the economic loss from the decrease in tuna fishing.
