President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appealed to all Maldivian journalists to always adhere to ethical practice, in exercising their role in the society. He made this appeal today while speaking to the people to Meedhoo Island, as part of his current tour of some islands in South Nilandhe Atoll. The President also conveyed greetings to all Maldivian journalists on the occasion of this year’s World Press Freedom Day being marked today.
In his speech, the President said that journalists have the right to report on the Government, State institutions and even the President. However, he stated that this did not mean that defamation of an individual was allowed.
Stating that this administration was always working with journalists, the President noted that it was the duty of journalists to bring to the notice of the people, the Government's endeavours being carried out for the betterment of country. Continuing in this regard, the President highlighted that journalism too was subject to boundaries. He pointed out that the freedom of press came with accountability to the public.
In his speech, President Yameen reiterated that the Government has never withheld the rights of journalists. Underlining that every individual living in the country must have equal rights, the President said that journalists must respect everyone, and be courteous of other people's rights and honour; and not be damaging to a person’s image.
