President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that resolving social issues is impossible without bringing transformational changes to the nation. The President made this remark while addressing the ceremony held to inaugurate the Harbour in South Nilandhe Atoll Ban’didhoo.

Highlighting the Administration aims to develop the whole country, the President stated that currently, the Administration is working on maintaining “Maldives as a nation for all the Maldivians” and that key changes are in the works to reflect this.

The President said that the major resource for development was through Tourism, and that increasing the number of tourists visiting the country could increase growth in the sector. The President stated that this could be achieved by developing Ibrahim Nasir International Airport via the completion of its planned expansion, which would cater to a larger number of tourists and in turn create more jobs for the youth.

In addition, the President stated that one of the key pledges of the Administration was to provide housing for citizens, and that this could be achieved with the availability of land to build houses, thus it is necessary to carry out land reclamation projects in islands with lack of space for housing.

At the ceremony, the President was awarded a special plaque of appreciation on behalf of people of Ban’didhoo to acknowledge the work done for the development of the island – the head of Ban’didhoo Council, Mr. Hassan Haneef, presented the plaque.

Accompanying President Yameen on this visit were Minister of Housing and Infrastructure; Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Leader of Maldives Development Alliance and Member of Parliament for Meedhoo constituency; Mr. Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, Parliament member of Fonadhoo constituency; Mr. Abdul Raheem Abdullah and Parliament member of Kudahuvadhoo constituency, Mr. Ahmed Amir.
