Cabinet recommends removing the reservations on ‘Convention of the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women’ (CEDAW) agreements section 16, after thorough discussion on the topic in the cabinet meeting today. The paper was submitted for cabinet discussion by Ministry of Law and Gender.
In today’s cabinet discussions, the cabinet members decided to take out the reservations on section 16 number 1, subsection (b), (e),(f) (g), (h) and number 2 of CEDAW agreement. Under the Maldives Constitution, section 93, the recommendation will be sent to the Maldivian Parliament for further address.
During today’s cabinet meeting, the cabinet members discussed and approved the paper submitted by Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture on the agreement on establishing the ‘SAARC Seed Bank’ in the Maldives. The main purpose of this bank is to act as a regional seed security reserve and provide regional support to national seed security efforts.
Furthermore in today’s cabinet meeting, cabinet members decided for Maldives to officially embrace the ‘Paris Agreement’ under the United Nations framework convention on climate change.
